Jan Rubczak (Stanislawow 1884 - Auschwitz concentration camp 1942) painter and printmaker; studied with Florian Cynk and Jozef Pankiewicz at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow from 1904 to 1911, and later at the Akademie für Graphishe Künsta und Buchgewerbe in Leipzig and the Académie Colarossi in Paris. After traveling in Europe (Italy, Spain, the Netherlands), he settled in Paris for several years, where he ran his own school of printmaking from 1917. After returning to Poland, from 1924 he taught at the Free School of Painting in Cracow, and in 1931-1932 he was an assistant at the graphics department of the local Academy. He belonged to the Society of Polish Artists "Sztuka", was a co-founder of the Society of Polish Artists in Paris and the Guild of Artists Jednoróg, and took part in numerous exhibitions at home and abroad. He painted landscapes, architectural motifs, interiors, portraits, flowers; his early paintings show the influence of Pankiewicz, and in his later work also of P. Cezanne. He was an outstanding graphic artist.
