Biography
Painter and draughtsman, brother of the painter Szymon; in 1856-1861 he studied at the School of Fine Arts in Warsaw under Rafał Hadziewicz and Ksawery Kaniewski. In 1862 he went to Dresden, studied at the Academy under J. Hübner and C. Peschl. In 1863 he was in Munich and studied at the Academy with H. Anschütz. He spent the following years in Rome, where he came into contact with Nazarene painting, which had a significant influence on his later work. He traveled throughout Italy and France, visiting, among other places, Paris. He returned to Poland in 1870 and settled in Warsaw. In 1879-1885 he was artistic director of the "Illustrated Weekly" and also did illustrations for "Kłosy" and other magazines. He painted primarily religious paintings for churches. In doing so, he referred to the art of the Nazarenes and paid great attention to detail and historical realities. He also painted portraits; in 1890-1891 he painted a series of family portraits for K. Zamoyski of Kozłówka. In addition, he was involved in mural painting and conservation of paintings. The artist's paintings can be found in many churches in Poland, including in Warsaw, Skarżysko Kamienna, Huszlewo, Mordach, Raciąż and Radzyń Podlaski .
