lithograph, paper, 20 x 14.5 cm (oval, framed), 29.5 x 24.5 cm (framed, passe-partout); signed on stone p. d.: Loffler; lithograph made in 1881 at the Artistic Lithography Department of Aureliusz Pruszyński in Kraków
Loeffler practiced genre and history painting. Despite his repeated stays abroad, he drew on themes from Poland's past in his paintings. His paintings were very popular in the second half of the 19th century, repeatedly reproduced in magazines, and several times - as lithographic prints - were distributed to members of the Cracow Society of Friends of Fine Arts and the Warsaw Society for the Encouragement of Fine Arts.
Among his better-known works are: "Emperor Rudolf I in the Battle of the Moravian Field" (commissioned by Archduke Rudolf), "Fight of the Greeks for Independence" and "Death of Czarniecki". Other paintings with historical themes include: "The Return of the Knight from the Vienna Expedition of 1683," "The Return from Yasir" (he made a second piece of this work for Emperor Franz Joseph), "After the Tatar Assault," "The Secret Wedding of the 17th Century," and "The Return of the Prodigal Son." Other genre scenes include: "The Lesson," "Two Bailiffs," "Broken Engagement," "Grandmother's Name Day," "Old Bachelor," "Forgotten Oratory, "as well as scenes from the life of the Polish people: "Handfasting", "Przekupka z Radymna".
He generally created oil paintings, less often watercolors (e.g., "A pair of lovers at the fairy", "Uninvited guests"). He often signed his paintings "Loeffler - Radymno" (e.g.: "Children in the Garden"), "L.L. - Radymno" or "L.L. from Radymno" to emphasize his Polish origin. He exhibited his works in Cracow, as well as abroad, primarily in Austria, Germany and France (including at the 1867 World Exhibition in Paris).
