Rene Magritte (1898-1967) Belgian painter, surrealist. Called the "author of words and things," he liked to rename objects. His paintings shocked and stirred controversy, and are distinguished by their poetic moodiness and precise drawing. The artist, who depicted a unified world reflected in successive reproductions, unwittingly influenced the art of the second half of the 20th century, primarily pop art.
