Biography
Painter and art theorist. Studied in St. Petersburg (1869-1871) and Munich (1872-1875). After returning to Poland, he collaborated with "Wanderer" and engaged in art criticism, creating its modern foundations. In 1890 he settled in Zakopane, where, fascinated by the local folk art, he created the theory of the Zakopane style by designing the architecture and interiors of Zakopane villas: "Koliba" by the Gnatowskis, "Pod Jedlami" by the Pawlikowskis, "Pepita" (later "Łada") by Chrostowski, "Korwinówka", "Zofiówka" and others. He was the designer of the Chapel of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Jaszczurówka (now a district of Zakopane). He was appointed an honorary citizen of Zakopane for his work for the city and was buried there in the Cemetery of Merit on Pęksowy Brzyzek.
