Biography
Polish visual artist, painter, illustrator and poster designer. His actual name was Juliusz Stefan Norblin de la Gourdaine. The artist's great-grandfather was the well-known 18th-century painter Piotr Norblin. Stefan Norblin is best known for his modernist and Art Nouveau advertising posters and his art deco paintings and frescoes. He studied painting in Antwerp and Dresden. In 1920 he took part in the Polish-Soviet War. After the war he returned to Warsaw, where he married Lena Żelichowska, a well-known actress and dancer at the time. In September 1939, he left the country. During World War II, he stayed in India, where he did a series of paintings for the Maharaja of Jodhpur, decorating the interior of the Umaid Bhawan Palace, the country's largest private residence. He also painted portraits of the local aristocracy and decorated their residences. After the war, he settled in the United States, where he earned money as a portrait painter. In 2007, Polish Television produced Stefan Norblin, a documentary film about the artist's colorful life.
