The painting "Adam and Eve" was created in 1932, influenced by the artist's fascination with the history of the first humans. The immediate impulse to begin painting was the sight of a nude model eating an apple during a break from posing in Lempicka's atelier. Tamara, delighted with the scene, began to sketch the girl. The role of Adam was played by a... a policeman whom the painter met while he was patrolling the neighborhood. Enchanted by his stature, she asked him to pose for this double portrait. In the background of the composition we see not Eden, but a modernist city - a contemporary paradise for the artist. It is interesting to note that the painting was for some time in the private collection of Barbara Streisand, who bought it for $135,000, only to sell it later for as much as two million dollars.
