Biography
Polish sculptor, graphic artist, poet and lieutenant of the Polish Legions, born in Jaroslaw. He attended courses at the Industrial School in Cracow, after graduating from it he studied at the Wood Industry School in Zakopane. He then began studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow, with sculpture taught by Konstanty Laszczka and graphics and painting by Józef Pankiewicz. Thanks to a scholarship he received, he continued his studies during a year-long stay in Paris. After returning to Cracow, he was involved in the organization of the Cracow Workshops (together with Wojciech Jastrzębowski), and was active in the Active Struggle Union and the Riflemen's Association. He was well known in Krakow's artistic circles, belonged to the Society of Polish Artists "Sztuka", and maintained friendly relations with Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz and Stefan Żeromski. In 1914 Konieczny joined the 1st Infantry Regiment of the Polish Legions. He died during the battles for Polish Mountain near Kostiuchnowka. Before his death, while stationed in Volhynia, he carved a statue of a legionnaire, which was given to Marshal Jozef Pilsudski as a naming gift on March 19, 1916, and from which a monument was made in Radom in 1930. Włodzimierz Konieczny was posthumously promoted to the rank of captain and awarded the Cross of Independence and the Order of Virtuti Militari Fifth Class.
