Biography
Magdalena Abakanowicz studied in 1950-54 at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts. She practiced sculpture. The first works that brought her international fame were the monumental, spatial tapestries with relief texture Abakans. Her sculptures are made in a variety of techniques and materials: ceramics, wood, bronze, plastic - both figurative and non-figurative. She has made and completed many projects for public places and museums. In 1965-90 she taught at the Academy of Fine Arts in Poznan. She is the author of erudite essays on art, mythology, religion. In 1965 she was awarded the Grand Prix at the Sao Paulo Biennale. She is ranked by world critics among the top artists of the 20th century.
