Frida Kahlo was a Mexican painter who lived in the first half of the 20th century. She was born in 1907 in a large family in a suburb of Mexico. Her father was an artist - he was involved in photography and painting. He infected his daughter with his passion when she was eighteen - from then on Frida abandoned her dreams of medicine to devote herself to capturing the world whether on canvas or in the camera frame.

Her art clearly drew on Mexican and Indian culture. As a result, she was often considered a manifestation of primitivism, or naive art, as well as folk or surrealist art. The artist has had health problems since childhood. At the age of six she underwent polio, while a few years later she was involved in a traffic accident. As a result, she suffered very serious injuries, including a fractured spine. Although she managed, after lengthy rehabilitation, to get back on her feet, for the rest of her life she struggled with the pain resulting from the earlier incident.

Analyzing Frida Kahlo's work, we see the influence of symbolism and realism, which led the painter to show reality as it is, without trying to "fix the world" in her work. Elements of Mexican culture are also evident - above all, this applies to the subject matter depicted in the paintings. The leitmotif in Kahlo's paintings is the life of women. In her work she focused on realism, always trying to depict her own life and not a fictional world. The artist immortalizes portraits, showing women in various contexts, most notably in a tough and harsh working environment.
