The Nibelungenlied(German: Nibelungenlied) or TheAfflictionof the Nibelungs (German: Nibelunge Not; both titles equal) is a medieval Germanic heroic epic, written in Middle High German around 1200 by an unknown author probably from the Pasava area, who based it on the stories contained in the Edda, the Saga of the House of Wölsung and the 13th century Dietrichsage (Dietrichsage). According to the traditional view, he was a knight of the Kürenberg family.
