Biography
Studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow under the direction of Józef Pankiewicz. Together with his master and the group forming the Paris Committee, he went to Paris in 1924. He returned to the country in 1933. During the war he made his way to Sweden, and from there in 1943 to England, where he had his first solo exhibition in 1946 at London's Redfern Gallery. Until 1958, he was active in teaching and art while in Britain. After returning to Poland, he was given professorships at the State Higher School of Fine Arts in Gdansk and Poznan. He was mainly engaged in painting, then turned gradually from representational painting to abstraction, preserving the essence of Polish colorism. The artist's post-war oeuvre is considered one of the most outstanding in the Polish artistic output.
