Franciszek Kostrzewski (Warsaw 1826 - Warsaw 1911) The life and work of Franciszek Kostrzewski, one of the most popular painters of the 19th century , were associated with Warsaw. He studied at the Warsaw School of Fine Arts, and his teachers were M.Zaleski, C.Breslauer and F.Piwarski, with whom he wandered the country in search of painting subjects among his colleagues. From 1849 he stayed and worked in Kielce for two years, invited by T.Zieliński, a patron and art collector. In 1856 he traveled around Europe for a longer period stopping in Paris. He lived permanently in Warsaw and published countless illustrations, satirical drawings and caricatures in the Warsaw magazines Tygodnik Ilustrowanym and Kłosy. The subject of his works - both drawings and paintings - was everyday life. With the flair of a realist, he painted genre scenes often placed against the background of the Polish landscape, recreated with evident fondness.
