Wladyslaw POCHWALSKI
1861 Kraków - 1921 Kraków
Painter and restorer from a multi-generational family of Krakow painters - great-grandson of Marcin, son of Jozef, brother of Kazimierz. He was married to Jadwiga née Zathey, whose sister Sophia was the wife of painter Stanislaw Kamocki. In 1877-1885 he studied at the School of Fine Arts in Cracow under Władysław Łuszczkiewicz, Feliks Szynalewski and Jan Matejko. He did complementary studies in Munich under Alexander Wagner and Otto Seitz (1890-1893). After his studies, he settled permanently in his native Cracow. He worked as a professor of drawing and painting at the Supplementary Courses of the Female School. He took over and developed his father's art conservation and restoration studio, which he ran with his sons Stanislaw and Kasper. From 1907 he worked at the National Museum in Cracow as head of the conservation department.
He was primarily concerned with his own works during his studies and early professional activity. These included landscapes and portraits, less frequently genre scenes. He exhibited them occasionally at the Society of Friends of Fine Arts in Krakow and Lviv.
