He was a student at the Académie Julian. In his early works the influence of Impressionism was perceived. Léger's work was strongly influenced by the paintings of Paul Cezanne and the early Cubism of Pablo Picasso. The painter's first solo exhibition took place in 1912 at Galerie Kahnweiler in Paris. For five years the artist lived in the United States (1940-1945). He then returned to France. In 1960, the Fernand Léger Museum was opened in Biot, France.
