In 1957 he entered the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts, from which he was expelled in 1961 for not conforming to the norms of Socialist Realism. In 1967 he founded the St. Petersburg group of artists. Together with philosopher Vladimir Ivanov, he wrote a treatise entitled Metaphysical Synthesis, dedicated to "new forms of icon painting, based on the study of religious art of all eras and nations." He underwent forced psychiatric treatment, and was expelled from the Soviet Union in 1971 after a famous exhibition in Paris. He participated in numerous exhibitions around the world. He has received many awards such as; Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Order of the French Ministry of Culture). He currently lives and works in the United States.
