The work is written in the form of a fictional diary. Jaszko Orfan is the narrator and title character of the novel. The plot covers the reign of four kings of the Jagiellonian dynasty: Casimir Jagiellon, Jan Olbracht, Alexander Jagiellon and Sigismund the Old. The action begins when Jaszko is a few years old child. Later he is a courtier at the court of four monarchs in succession. He learns that the people who raised him - the townspeople of Vilnius - are his adoptive parents. The hero decides to find out who the real ones are. However, he encounters obstacles.
