The "Gemstones" series (French: Les Gemmes or Les Pierres Précieuses) is one of the most recognizable and highly regarded series of lithographs created by Alphonse Mucha, a prominent artist of the Art Nouveau era. It was created in 1900 and perfectly captures Mucha's distinctive style, combining decorativeness, symbolism and the beauty of the female figure.
Each print shows a graceful female figure surrounded by lush, stylized floral motifs and ornaments typical of Art Nouveau. The women are dressed in airy robes, and their poses and facial expressions perfectly reflect the symbolism of the particular stone and the season with which it was often associated:
Ruby: Red, symbolizes passion, love and energy. Often associated with summer.
Amethyst: Purple, symbolizes peace, intuition and spirituality. Associated with winter.
Emerald: Green, symbolizes hope, rebirth and nature. Associated with spring.
Topaz: Yellow, symbolizes joy, warmth and prosperity. Associated with autumn.
The "Gemstones" series is an excellent example of Mucha's influence on art and design of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His works not only decorated salons, but also popularized Art Nouveau aesthetics, influencing fashion, jewelry and interior design. To this day, they are still objects of desire for collectors and art lovers.
