He initially studied in Paris under Tadeusz Górecki, then attended the Munich Academy (1869–1872) and at the Kraków School of Fine Arts (1872–1876), where he was a student of Jan Matejko. He painted portraits, genre scenes, and works with fairy-tale and fantastical themes drawing on folk beliefs and legends, as well as symbolic compositions inspired by the Romantic poetry of Słowacki, Krasiński, and Mickiewicz. His paintings were highlighted in a major monographic exhibition of his works organized in 1992 by the National Museum in Poznań and also shown in Warsaw and Kraków.
