After attending the Weimar Academy and travelling to France, Italy and Switzerland, Max Beckmann settled down in Berlin. The titled 'Tauentzienstraße' was laid out in Berlin as early as the 1860s and remains a central artery of the city to this day. The proof print, dated 1909, shows an elegantly dressed group of people strolling along this shopping street. The KaDeWe, Germany's most famous department stores', was just built there. Women with dapper headdresses, gentlemen with hats, walking sticks and suits, as well as shop windows in the background of the scene can be seen. This print was produced as a lithograph in 1912 and in this way, it makes further reference to the painting of 'Tauentzienstraße', which is also mentioned in the artist's catalogue raisonné.
