Kołtun (Latin: Plica polonica "Polish koltun"), also known as nail, nailhead or bundle - a bundle of hair on the head glued together with sebum and exudative secretions (e.g. due to lice), formed as a result of lack of hygiene or failure to use a brush or comb. The formation of a quilt was also encouraged by the widespread wearing of hats among peasants. Old medical superstitions forbade the trimming of quills for fear of negative health effects (mental disorders, blindness). Wearing a koltun was supposed to protect against disease and the devil.
