In the summer of 1626, King Gustav II Adolf of Sweden landed in Pilawa, beginning his march toward Gdansk. This event placed Torun at the heart of the coming war. The city found itself close to the line of hostilities and quickly began to mobilize - walls were strengthened, soldiers were enlisted, and during the Grudziądz Sejmik in October of that year support was pledged for the defense of the Republic.
Due to its location, Torun was chosen as a concentration point for Polish troops to face the Swedes.
In response to the threat, King Sigismund III Vasa convened an extraordinary Sejm in the city - the land sejm was held in September, and the session of the Sejm began on November 10, 1626. Marcin Żegocki, a Wschowa land judge, became Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies.
The main topic discussed was how to defend the country against a Swedish attack that could deprive the Republic of access to the sea. Threats from Turkey, Transylvania and the Tartars were also discussed.
As a result, a conscription universal was passed and a treasury commission was established to prepare a draft for reforming the country's finances.
The deliberations ended on December 3, 1626, and the decisions made in Torun became one of the most important elements in organizing the defense of the Republic in the war with Sweden.
The old print concerns an important moment in Polish history. The Diet convened in Torun in 1626 was a reaction to the Swedish landing in Prussia and foreshadowed a long-term conflict for dominance in the Baltic.
Very rare!
