Mathys Schoevaerdts (1660/65 – c. 1702), Landscape with Fortress and Waterfall. Signed lower right: M SCHOEVAERDTS. In a landscape with a fortress next to a waterfall, a shepherd with a herd of goats is moving on the left. The group on the right in the middle distance is reminiscent of Madonna with the child and Joseph on the flight to Egypt. The landscape type belongs to the tradition of classical heroic landscape developed in Italy by Nicolas Poussin. It is unusual for Schoevaerdts, but the tree trunk and staffage figures are typical of him. The image is maintained in the RKD database:https://rkd.nl/explore/images/232154. Oil on wood, 24,5 x 35 cm
