Poseidon, Roman Neptune, was one of the twelve Olympian gods of ancient Greece. He was the god of the sea and the brother of Zeus. Poseidon was also the god of the Oracle of Delphi before Apollo was given these tasks. Poseidon is often depicted in a large chariot drawn by hippocamps. Trident in hand, he is accompanied by his wife Amphitrite and sea nymphs. This painting is a highly decorative work in a wonderful frame appropriate to the period, adorned with genuine gold leaf.
